The Background
India today boasts of one of the cheapest data rates in the entire world. The price Indians pay per Gigabyte of data is substantially lower than what many developed nations in the West pay today! However, this was not always the case. It was the entry of one player in the Telecom sector that redefined the information landscape in the Indian subcontinent. The entry of Reliance Jio with its offer of providing free sim cards precipitated the mass adoption and acceptance of this digital technology we know as the Internet. The rapid rise of daily internet usage combined with falling data and mobile phone rates created the foundation for a digital future. A future whose potential a young Product manager and a family business entrepreneur recognized and capitalized on.
The Inception
“Reflecting on the eventful 2.5 years that have transpired since we began working together, we didn’t imagine in our wildest dreams that a side project would blossom into a full-fledged digital agency.”
It all began in 2018. Poonam was working in the family business, developing her entrepreneurial and leadership qualities. Kushal was a product manager at Reliance Jio, where he oversaw the development of various mobile applications and websites. What bought these two college-mates together was their burning passion for launching something of their own. An opportunity presented itself when an acquaintance approached the duo to develop a website. Poonam, with her keen and meticulous nature, immediately took a liking for product experience and design. Kushal, with his problem-solving attitude, took up product development and management. Propitiously, their entry into this space coincided with the internet and mobile phone boom in India. One successful project led to another, and in a matter of six months working part-time, Poonam and Kushal completed ten projects for clients from industries such as Real estate, Healthcare, E-commerce and Films. This juncture was a turning point as the duo took the plunge into entrepreneurship and launched D-WebBox.
